Issues of divorce settlements typically include who gets the house, child custody, division of assets, but we decided to take a look at some of the “not so typical” settlement issues. At the beginning of this new pandemic year, everyone needs a little humor.
Not Necessarily what you might expect
Here in California, we naturally think of celebrities as having the strangest divorce settlements, and they do, however we found that some other states and countries have their weird ones as well. For instance, a Cambodian couple ended their marriage by making sure each of them got a part of their house in the settlement. They sawed the house in half (easier to do because it was made of wood), and each got a half. Both were happy.
“Incurable Idiocy” developed during the marriage, can be grounds for divorce in Mississippi. According to the Mississippi Bar, it is a legal reason because of the impact it has on the marriage. There is a stipulation though---one of the spouses must not have known of the condition before getting married.
Hard to believe, but true, during his divorce, a Long Island doctor demanded his wife return the kidney that he had given her during their marriage or pay him $1.5 million in compensation for the kidney. She had been cheating on him, he said. The request was denied. An organ donation is legally a gift, not a loan.
