MEDIATION NOT JUST FOR THE FINAL DECISIONS OF DIVORCE

You’ve heard about intermittent fasting to improve your health, but what about intermittent mediation to improve your marriage? Mediation is often used to settle divorces out of court in a neutral, non-judgmental environment. But, it’s not only used when couples feel certain that a divorce is the only way to resolve their differences. It’s excellent for negotiating interim terms for issues that need immediate attention prior to the finalization of a divorce. It can also be used by couples who want to save their marriage, have a few issues to work out, and need a neutral third-party to help resolve those issues.

Resolving Marriage Issues with Mediation

Important Interim Issues

Prior to the ultimate resolution of divorce, which may take time, most couples have a few interim issues that need to be resolved quickly. Parenting issues can be one of the most difficult and the most important to resolve. The development of a schedule for access to children is a priority. Who stays in the matrimonial home, visitation schedules, responsibility for transportation, child support, all need to be decided. Other temporary issues can include: payment of household bills, financial disclosures, and any issues that couples feel they can’t resolve on their own. Mediation helps to satisfy the needs and concerns of the family. Through mediation, couples are helped to realistically solve their differences and maintain a workable agreement based upon understanding, mutual respect, and cooperation.

Working out Differences

Sometimes in both beginning and long-term marriages, couples may find themselves with issues that they can’t work out on their own. Mediation leads couples to focus on the problems that need to be solved, before they grow too large. “The biggest mistake couples make is avoidance, “says Joseph Grenny, co-author of the New York Times bestseller Crucial Conversations. “We tend to only weigh immediate and obvious risks without considering the longer term costs to intimacy trust and connection.”

Mediation can help stop the problems before they get too big. It can help couples see the reality of their assumptions and those of their partners, and lead to a better understanding of each other’s needs.
